Melbourne’s historic Orthodox Church re-opens after disastrous fire

Melbourne’s historic Annunciation of Our Lady Orthodox church which was severely burnt in early May 2016 by fire will again open its doors on the eve of the feast day of the Annunciation, March 24.The project for the thorough restoration of the church, one of Melbourne’s oldest and the second Greek-Orthodox church to be founded in Australia, is still in progress.The fire caused extensive damage to the church which was inaugurated during 1901Built by the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, it was constructed in 1900-2 to serve Greeks, Syrians and other nationalities of the Orthodox faith.It is protected by the Heritage Act 1995 and was included as part of the Victorian Heritage Register in 1982.The festivities will begin on Saturday evening with the service for the Feast of the Holy Annunciation of Our Lady celebrated by His Grace Bishop Ezekiel of Dervis, assisted by a number of Orthodox priests and is expected to be attended by hundreds of parishioners.On Sunday, the Feast Day will be celebrated with the Divine Liturgy officiated by His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis.Read more here.RELATED TOPICS: Greece, Greek tourism news, Tourism in Greece, Greek islands, Hotels in Greece, Travel to Greece, Greek destinations , Greek travel market, Greek tourism statistics, Greek tourism reportPhoto Source: Wikimedia Commons Copyright: Nazareth College License: CC-BY-SASource: greekreporter.com
