Rethinking Higher Education: Inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals

Universities have an important part to play towards creating a sustainable society. This year, a global conference put focus on the integration of the UN’s Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into higher education “Rethinking Higher Education: Inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals”.More than 500 university students, teachers, researchers, decision-makers and representatives from the business and government sectors gathered to discuss how higher education institutions can begin to incorporate the UN Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development. Discussing the SDG’s agenda of “promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all” (SDG 8), participants concluded that universities have a responsibility to raise awareness on a broad scale, provide future professionals with tools to improve working conditions in their later careers and be role models for decent work. The conference was organised by Karolinska Institutet, with the support of the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
