Athens suburban Proastiakos railway to be extended to Egio by end August

After the completion of an ultramodern double electrified highspeed rail line, whose first test run is to take place on Wednesday, the Proastiakos suburban railway currently running from Athens' international airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' to the town of Kiato is expected to reach as far as the coastal town of Egio in the north Peloponnese by the end of August, according to ANA. ERGOSE has completed the construction of the new modern infrastructure that includes six tunnels of a total length of 11 kilometres, eight escape tunnels with a total length of 1,700 metres, 19 rail bridges, 63 underpasses and 10 overpasses that enable trains to reach high speeds exceeding 200 km/hour. At this stage, all infrastructure (tunnels, bridges, earthworks etc), as well as stops and stations on the 72-km section of the line from Kiato to Egio are finished. Also completed in April, through a contract worth 227 million euros, was the construction of superstructure that enables trains to run on this section.
