Hellenic Film Society presents screening of Kazantzakis movie on December 9

ASTORIA – The Hellenic Film Society USA (HFS) presents a screening of Kazantzakis, the story of the author widely considered the greatest Greek writer of the 20th century. Based on his autobiography, Report to Greco, the lushly photographed film recounts the life of Cretan-born Nikos Kazantzakis. The screening will be held at the Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Avenue in Astoria, on Sunday, December 9, 4 PM. The award-winning film, directed by Iannis Smaragdis, stars Odysseas Papaspiliopoulos as Kazantzakis, Marina Kalogirou, Thodoris Atheridis, and New York native Anthoula Katsimatides. Shot on location in Crete, Athens, Aegina, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, and Antibes, Kazantzakis won awards for Best Cinematography, as well as Best Music Score, Best Actor (Papaspiliopoulos), and the Grand Remi Award for Best of Show at WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival earlier this year. Perhaps best known for writing Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ, Kazantzakis wrote dozens of books and was considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature nine different years. Much of his work explores his view of the unique physical and spiritual aspects of Greece, a nation he believed belonged to neither the East nor West. “The Hellenic Film Society is pleased to introduce this important writer to American audiences through this film,” said HFS President Jimmy Demetro. “It beautifully captures how Kazantzakis cherished freedom and stayed true to his values with dignity and discipline, despite persecution.” Kazantzakis is part of the Museum of the Moving Image’s Always on Sunday film series, featuring monthly Sunday afternoon screenings of Greek films.
