Acapulco to Host 25th Mexican Tennis Open

Mexico is set to welcome tennis’ biggest and brightest stars.The Mexican Tennis Open, scheduled to take place at the Acapulco Princess Mundo Imperial Hotel February 26 to March 3, 2018, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.“Hosting this award-winning tournament again in Acapulco is a testament to the trust of international sports organizations and the range of world-class venues the city offers,” said Pedro Haces Sordo, president of the Acapulco Destination Marketing Office. “It is rare to find half of the world’s 10 best tennis players together in one of the most iconic beach destinations in the world.”MORE Destination & TourismThe Mexican Open is sponsored by communications company Telcel as well as HSBC. It is one of 13 Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour 500 series tournaments.Players include Rafael Nadal of Spain who is number-one in the ATP ranking, Germany’s Alexander Zverev (ranked number four), Austria’s Dominic Thiem (ranked number five) and Croatia’s Marin Cilic (ranked number six), along with Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro who is in 10th place in the standings. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money are on the line for players.The tennis tournament is just one of many exciting international events on the city’s calendar for 2018 that is sure to draw visitors during every season of the year.With concerts from some of the world’s most famous DJs and pop stars set to take place, music is a central theme throughout2018. In addition to Acapulco’s numerous restaurants, festivals celebrating culinary traditions from around the world will take place, including the annual Paellas festival in May.The city continues to be a favorite vacation spot. Last year, Acapulco saw strong gains in occupancy rates and this year, the trend continues. Occupancy rates for the first weekend in February reached 85.2 percent with more than 100,000 visitors coming to the city, according to the Destination Marketing Office.Investors are also betting on Acapulco’s future, making large investments in projects that are sure to draw visitors, including the new XTASEA attraction and new resort complexes.A new tennis stadium is also said to be in the works, meaning that this will surely not be the last time that tennis’ greats descend upon the resort city.
