Un projet révolutionnaire financé par l'UE mène à la découverte de sept planètesLa vie sur une autre planète est-elle possible? Un ambitieux projet de recherche financé par l'Union européenne a mené à la découverte d'un nouveau système de planètes aux caractéristiques très intéressantes. "Cette découverte spectaculaire démontre que la collaboration internationale et le soutien décisif de la Commission européenne à la recherche permettent de relancer une des quêtes les plus fascinantes: la vie hors du système solaire. Je félicite l'équipe du chercheur belge Michaël Gillon qui, à la tête d'une équipe internationale et grâce à des fonds de l'Union européenne, a posé les bases de cette découverte révolutionnaire," s'est félicité le commissaire Carlos Moedas, en charge de la recherche, des sciences et de l'innovation. Baptisé TRAPPIST-1, ce système compte, autour d'une étoile, sept planètes de même taille que la Terre pouvant abriter de l'eau sous forme liquide à leur surface. Découvert avec l'aide de la NASA, TRAPPIST-1 est ainsi le système comptant le plus de planètes telluriques et le plus grand nombre de planètes potentiellement habitables jamais découverts.  Cette découverte s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet SPECULOOS (Search for habitable Planets EClipsing Ultra-¬‐cOOl Stars),  un projet de détection d'exoplanètes potentiellement habitables, mené par une équipe internationale dirigée par Michaël Gillon, astronome à l'Université de Liège. La découverte, annoncée hier par la revue "Nature", a été possible grâce au suivi intensif du système avec plusieurs télescopes, dont le télescope spatial Spitzer de la NASA, qui a enrichi les résultats obtenus dans un premier temps par le télescope liégeois TRAPPIST-Sud en mai 2016 en révélant la présence de quatre planètes supplémentaires. Le projet SPECULOOS est actuellement dans sa phase finale de préparation sur le site de l'Observatoire Européen Austral de Paranal (ESO) au Chili. In this context, the Southern Gas Corridor is a major initiative to bring Caspian and Central Asian gas resources to European markets. To drive this process and enable gas flows from the Caspian Sea and Central Asia towards Europe by 2020, the Southern Gas Advisory Council has already met twice, in 2015 and in 2016. During today's third Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council in Baku, Azerbaijan, Vice President Maroš Šefčovič meets with Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan; as well as with various high-ranking officials of countries involved in the Southern Gas Corridor, including Greece, Italy and Turkey. "Energy Union delivers. By 2020, we will have gas flowing through the Southern Gas Corridor to Europe; further diversifying our energy supplies. Building the Energy Union is not an end in itself. It is a huge modernisation programme for Europe, benefiting young Europeans, entrepreneurs and mayors across the continent", said Vice-President Šefčovič ahead of today's meeting. The biggest increases in annual exports were to the USA (up €1.26 billion) and China (up €1.06 billion). At the same time, the value of EU agri-food imports went down 1.5% to €112 billion. This leads to an increase of the EU agri-food trade surplus to € 18.8 billion, up from €15.3 billion in 2015. The agri-food sector accounted for 7.5% of total EU exports in goods in 2016; and 6.6% of all imported goods are agri-food products. With a surplus of €18.8 billion the agri-food sector is also a major contributor to the overall surplus of the European Union in merchandise trade, which stood at €39.3 billion in 2016. Throughout last year, EU producers have successfully increased exports of non-commodity primary products (pigmeat, vegetables). Also export values for processed agricultural products (wine, olive oil) and food preparation increased by 4 to 5% in average, while export values for commodities (wheat and other cereals, milk powder) and non-edible products went down. This month's report focuses on agri-food trade with Canada. The EU is a net-exporter of agri-food products to Canada, with a surplus of about € 1.25 billion in 2016. Main EU export products are value added processed products, food preparations and beverages, with wine, spirits and liqueurs, confectionery, beer as well as pastry and biscuits being the most important product categories. Commissioner Mimica reaffirmed EU's strong commitment to work together with all partners to build resilience and sustainable responses to common challenges, such as climate change, disaster risk reduction and sustainable energy transition. "Our Overseas Countries and Territories have great potential to act as regional hubs of excellence in addressing issues of common concern. We will continue to work closely together in addressing the challenge of climate change and increasing the use of renewable energies", reaffirmed Commissioner Mimica on this occasion. During the Forum, the Commissioner will sign Programming Documents under the 11th European Development Fund together with OCT partners, such as New Caledonia (€29.8 million) to support employment and professional inclusion in the region. Projects in Saba, worth €3.55 million, will invest in renewable energy and €2.45 million will be earmarked for energy projects in Sint Eustatius. €14.05 million will be made available to support education in Anguilla, and the Turks and Caicos Islands will benefit from projects worth €14.6 million to support education and vocational training. Parmi eux, plus de 10 millions (58,8%) apprenaient deux langues étrangères ou plus. Étudié par environ 17 millions d'élèves (97,3%), l'anglais était de loin la langue étrangère la plus populaire au cours du premier cycle de l'enseignement secondaire. Le français (5 millions d'élèves, soit 33,8%) arrivait en deuxième position, suivi de l'allemand (3 millions, soit 23,1%) et de l'espagnol (2 millions, soit 13,6%).
