Στο συλλυπητήριο μήνυμα της η κ. Μενδώνη αναφέρει: «Πολυβραβευμένος, με πλούσια δραστηριότητα, στην κριτική, το δοκίμιο, τη διδασκαλία, το ραδιόφωνο, αλλά κυρίως στον ποιητικό λόγο, ο Κώστας Παπαγεωργίου υπήρξε από τους βασικούς εκπροσώπους της γενιάς του ’70 και από εκείνους που με την αναλυτική τους σκέψη ανανέωσαν τη σύγχρονη ελληνική ποίηση. Ποιητής της “γενιάς της αμφισβήτησης”, των ποιητών που έζησαν ταραγμένες εποχές με έντονες αλλαγές, τη μεταπολεμική περίοδο, τη δεκαετία του ’60, τη δικτατορία και τη μεταπολίτευση, ο Παπαγεωργίου προτίμησε να δώσει έναν άλλο τίτλο στη γενιά του. Την ονόμασε “γενιά της άρνησης”, μια αντίδραση έντονη, βιωματική και πρωτογενή. Ο λόγος του Κώστα Παπαγεωργίου χαρακτηριζόταν από αυτά τα στοιχεία. Η ποίησή του και η κριτική του ματιά έχουν επηρεάσει σημαντικά τη σύγχρονη ελληνική λογοτεχνία του τέλους του 20ου και των αρχών του 21ου αιώνα. Εκφράζω τα θερμά μου συλλυπητήρια στην οικογένεια και στους φίλους του».
