Την είδηση επιβεβαίωσε το τουρκικό υπουργείο Άμυνας, αναφέροντας πως το δυστύχημα συνέβη στις 14:15 τοπική ώρα (ίδια ώρα Ελλάδος), ενώ έχει ξεκινήσει έρευνα για τα αίτια της συντριβής. Σύμφωνα με τα τοπικά μέσα ενημέρωσης, το αεροσκάφος ανήκε στην αεροβική ομάδα Turkish Stars της Πολεμικής Αεροπορίας και το δυστύχημα σημειώθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια μιας εκπαιδευτικής πτήσης. Ο Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν εξέφρασε τα συλλυπητήριά του για το δυστύχημα, αναφέροντας χαρακτηριστικά ότι «εκφράζω τα συλλυπητήριά μου στην οικογένεια, τους συγγενείς του, τις τουρκικές ένοπλες δυνάμεις και το έθνος».
