Greek academic elected head of Ancient Historians Association in the US

Associate Professor of History at Illinois State University Dr. Georgia Tsouvala has been recently elected the president of the Association of Ancient Historians (AAH), according to greekreporter.com. The AAH has been the leading organization of Ancient History professionals in the United States and Canada since 1974. It is the biggest organization in North America that is devoted exclusively to promoting teaching and scholarship in the history of the ancient Mediterranean world and its relations with other regions in the world. Tsouvala joined Illinois State University in 2007. While working on her Ph.D. from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York, she taught at Hunter College and Western Illinois University. In 2013, she took part in the Provost’s Leadership Initiative, and in 2016 was elected president of the Alumni/ae Association of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA). She currently serves as past president of the Alumni/ae Association, and as an elected member of the Executive Committee of the ASCSA, as well as on several committees at ISU. Tsouvala has won several external grants and written numerous articles on ancient women, as well as on the history and literature of ancient Greece in the late Hellenistic and early Roman period (146 B.C.E.-150 C.E.). She is the co-author of two textbooks, A Brief History of Ancient Greece: Politics, Society, and Culture (2020), and Ancient Greece: A Political, Social, and Cultural History (2017) both from Oxford University Press, and co-editor of The Discourse of Marriage in the Greco-Roman World, (The University of Wisconsin Press, 2020). A forthcoming co-edited volume, Directions for the Study of Women in the Greco-Roman World, is in production with Oxford University Press and is expected to be published by late fall.
