Epidaurus Festival: A unique theatre experience
One of the oldest theatres in the world, dating back to the 4th century BC, situated on the Argolis mountains, the breathtakingly beautiful Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is celebrated across the globe for its perfect acoustics. Built inside the Asklipeio archaeological site, the Ancient Theatre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Spanning a rich history of 65 years, the Epidaurus Festival primarily features performances of ancient Greek drama. Over the years, household names have presented their work at this iconic venue, including the soprano Maria Callas, the directors Peter Stein and Peter Hall, actors Helen Mirren, Fiona Shaw, Kevin Spacey and Ethan Hawke, the choreographer Pina Bausch, and prestigious theatre groups and companies such as Piccolo Teatro, Schaubühne, and the National Theatre (London).
