Zacatecas, Mexico to Host World Heritage Cities Festival

Zacatecas’ mayor, Ulises Mejia Haro proposed a new festival concept called the Festival of World Heritage Cities to the National Association of Mexican World Heritage Cities in San Juan del Rio, Queretaro.The festival proposal was approved and fully authorized by the council and will be held soon in the capital of Zacatecas with the support of the association, as well as the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico and UNESCO.MORE Destination & Tourism Mayor Ulises Mejia believes this festival will highlight Zacatecas’ artistic and cultural heritage, as well as the traditions and customs that characterize it. He believes it’s the perfect place for the World Heritage Cities Festival because it will offer travelers an opportunity to experience "that feeling that makes a World Heritage city like Zacatecas authentic."While the dates and specific activities of the festival are not entirely clear, we do know that scientific forums for young people will be held at the World Heritage Cities Festival to educate them in the importance of UNESCO appointments to cultural areas.Frederic Vacheron, a representative of UNESCO, sees this World Heritage Cities Festival as a great opportunity for Zacatecas’ tourism effort and for promoting the concept of World Heritage."It is important that civil society is involved in conservation and promotion policies of cities like Zacatecas," he said.
