Hurricane Michael sped by the Mexican Caribbean, churning the sea and bringing heavy winds. While it did minimal damage, it did leave behind an unwelcome visitor—sargasso.According to a report in the Riviera Maya News, sargasso inundated the beaches of Isla Mujeres after the storm passed by.MORE Destination & Tourism The high winds and large waves carried more than 7 tons of the seagrass to the island’s shores but the problem was cleaned up through a combined effort by municipal employees and private companies.“The gusts of wind that were felt in Isla Mujeres were intense and the waves brought a lot of sargasso that was concentrated in these areas of the municipality, so it was necessary to carry out cleaning to keep our beaches free of the seaweed,” Juan Carrillo Soberanis, municipal president, told the Riviera Maya News.Employees of the City of Isla Mujeres were met by private companies and public volunteers for a beach clean up of the island’s most popular beaches, Playa Centro and Playa Norte.While Michael may have passed by the state of Quintana Roo as a tropical storm, it hit the U.S. coast as a Category 4 storm, leaving devastation in its wake.
